I've spent a good deal of my life just a few hour drive from Joshua Tree National Park but never paid it a visit until just recently. I guess what they say is true - we often take for granted what's in our own backyard. Motivated by COVID restrictions, I've found my joy of adventuring in day trips from San Diego, and this is the first of a short series I'd like to share with you. Happy New Year Insta friends! I hope 2021 will answer all of your hopes and dreams. Even though my posts are infrequent, I'd like you to know that I truly enjoy the community here with you and the moments that you share. And I am so grateful for all of your support. It is about time I wrapped up my beach series, as autumn is officially here, and for some friends, winter has come early. Ironically, I took this photo almost exactly on this day, several years ago, on a homecoming from Europe. I shot it on my iPhone. It was one of those moments where you are rushing somewhere else, but something jolts you into acknowledging the present. In this case I couldn't ignore the gorgeous coast. And I held a certain gratitude for the undeniable and familiar San Diego vibe of a business as usual for a beautiful sunset on a normal weekday in October. With summer winding down, I thought it would be a good time to transition my seaside series to San Diego, a city I’ve enjoyed living in on and off for many years. San Diego is famous for Indian summers, so summer is still going strong here. I’m a desert girl and I love the heat, but I don’t love the wildfires and their trail of devastation, which are currently raging due to this hot, dry weather. This is a photo I took near one of my favorite beachside destinations, a Mexican restaurant on a beautiful stretch of beach in North County San Diego called Las Olas (@lasolasmex). I took this photo on one of my homecomings from Europe, so smitten again by the gorgeous California beach. I find so much peace in this image, I thought it would be a nice change from the inundation of stress and anxiety many of us have been experiencing. Hang in there. Here’s to a beautiful weekend right around the corner! :) Cinque Terre is my favorite seaside destination in Italy. Perhaps I feel this way because it has become so familiar over the years of many trips here, but I think it is just because it is such a special place. Located on the Northwest coast of Italy and pretty reachable from my home base of Bologna, each time I have visited my experience has felt completely different, as each of the villages that make up Cinque Terre are quite distinct. This is a day tripper's haven, so staying overnight here is a chance to get to know the locals, and feel a bit of what their everyday is. The locals are especially kind people, and they've always treated my traveling companions and I like family. Cinque Terre isn't difficult to get to, per se, but it is a destination that requires research before you arrive to ensure you can get the most out of your time here. I have a blog post in the works and I'll share a link when it is up! I'm reliving past beloved adventures in these days of limited travel opportunities, including a wonderful trip I took to Trani, Puglia. The Italian region of Puglia has been a favorite of mine since my friends and English students from Puglia introduced me to their gorgeous hometowns and inspired me to make this trip to Trani. This was the start of my adventures in Puglia, including a visit to the iconic and mysterious Castel del Monte pictured on the Italian one-cent Euro coin. I highly recommend this trip, and I've just written a blog post all about it. The link to the post is in my bio! It would be nice if the seaside was always just beautiful beaches and stunning cliffs, but on my trip here to Ancona, Italy, I was ok with the industrial seaside. My trip to Ancona was for a specific purpose - to catch the ferry from Ancona to Corfu, Greece. I arrived the day before and stayed in an affordable B&B for the night. I don't like tight connections when I travel, and it would have been pretty stressful to train from Bologna to Ancona early in the morning and make it in time for the boarding process on the ferry. I found Ancona to be a relaxed city, affordable and easy to explore with my half-day of free time there. I was so glad I had decided to give myself plenty of time, as the check-in process for the ferry was much more complex than I had anticipated, but I loved the voyage on the ferry and would recommend it to anyone who is considering it. I’ve found Salerno to be a great place to base myself for exploring the Amalfi Coast. Salerno is easy to access by train or boat, it is very affordable, and has everything you might need. During a typical summer, the ferry schedule out of Salerno is robust, and it will take you to the villages along the Amalfi coast cheaply and quickly. And the ferry ride itself is a huge treat. I didn't have an agenda when I visited Salerno, and my B&B host kindly suggested an itinerary for me one of my days in town. Per her instructions, I walked to the Salerno ferry terminal, took the ferry to Amalfi, and from Pontile Il Faro I was able to access a free boat that takes day trippers and hotel guests to Conca dei Marini. I shared the boat with a local couple who were planning a vow renewal party in Conca dei Marini. When we arrived I couldn't believe that my lunch would be spent on a wooden deck hovering over some of the prettiest seaside I'd ever seen. I spent hours there, happily, and then did my same route in reverse to get back to Salerno. Sometimes it really pays to ask the locals what they like to do. :) For more photos and videos of this special day on the Amalfi Coast, please check out my @stellerstories at the link in my bio! Sunday evenings are my favorite part of the week in Italy. People are out enjoying time with their loved ones following church and family lunches, and the pace and energy are dialed down a few notches. The passeggiata (stroll) is often the highlight of Sunday evenings, and summertime temps make the evening passeggiata even more desirable, as an opportunity to get some fresh air during the period of cooler evening temps. Salerno especially has long, gorgeous vistas along its promenade. The day I took this photo I had forgotten it was Sunday, and when I arrived at the promenade bursting with locals, I realized immediately what day it was.
